BBC Studios has teamed up with Escape Hunt UK to create an escape game experience based around the newest series of Doctor Who.

The mash-up of Doctor Who and escape rooms is a perfect fit – one that I proposed a few years back:

So as you can imagine, I’m incredibly excited!

Escape Hunt have rooms in throughout England and Scotland, but they’ve not yet opened an escape room in Wales.

Given that Cardiff is the beating heart of the Doctor Who revival, I certainly hope that this changes.

The news comes on the back of a swathe of Doctor Who reveals, including the teaser trailer for Series 11 that was revealed at SDCC.

Richard Harpham of Escape Hunt said of the partnership:

“Going on an Escape Hunt is all about stepping into and experiencing new worlds… Doctor Who represents the very best in British action adventure and has a loyal and dedicated fan base that spans all generations. We look forward to bringing the show to life for all of them in its first ever live escape game experience”

The first Doctor Who escape game will open December 2018, with more rooms opening in Birmingham, Leeds, Oxford and Reading from early 2019.

Suspiciously, the official announcement mentions six rooms in total, but only five cities are named. This gives me great hope that we’ll see one in Cardiff too.

I asked Escape Hunt HQ about the possibility of a Cardiff venue. A spokesperson said:

We think that Cardiff would be a great market for Escape Hunt and are excited at the prospect of opening a site there. As such, we are in the process of looking at suitable premises for Escape Hunt in Cardiff.

I’d hazard a guess that these rooms will focus on Jodie Whittaker’s TARDIS interior.

You then get the wow factor of interacting with TARDIS console, as well as being able to tack on any kind of room you want outside of that (the fabled swimming pool, perhaps?)

What would you most like to see in a Doctor Who escape room? Let me know in the comments!
